CLEARFIELD® Production System for rice.

CLEARFIELD – a clear winner for rice.

In just a few short years, the CLEARFIELD Production System for rice has proven its value to U.S. rice growers who now plant it on over a third of all rice acres in the Southern rice-growing states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri.

The reasons behind its success?

The CLEARFIELD Production System for rice offers consistent value and convenience. The combination of high performing CLEARFIELD rice varieties and hybrids along with the exceptional effectiveness of BASF herbicides to control red rice and other tough weeds – deliver unparalleled benefits to rice growers. Those benefits just keep getting better through continued research and commitment to stewardship. Read on to see how.

Improving CLEARFIELD varieties and hybrids.

CLEARFIELD varieties and hybrids continue to improve yield, milling, lodging and disease tolerance.

Existing Varieties and Hybrids

Growers can choose a CLEARFIELD rice variety: CL161: This variety is available through retailers of the ORYGEN® Seed Marketing System as authorized by Horizon Ag.

CL161
CL161 is an early, short-stature, long grain rice variety that provides good yield potential and high tolerance to Newpath herbicide. It closely resembles Cypress in appearance, performance and maturity. Milling and grain quality are excellent. Evaluations indicate high susceptibility to sheath blight as well as susceptibility to blast. CL161 has good adaptability across the entire southern rice growing area with excellent second crop potential.

Growers can choose from two CLEARFIELD rice hybrids: CLEARFIELD XL8 and XL730 from RiceTec.

CLEARFIELD XL8
The hybrid market leader, CLEARFIELD XL8 combines hybrid yield potential, Newpath herbicide tolerance, excellent disease resistance and straw strength to provide rice producers with high yield and outstanding red rice/weed control. Suitable for use throughout the U.S. except California, CLEARFIELD XL8 is a long grain with superior ratoon crop potential. CLEARFIELD XL8 meets industry milling standards.

CLEARFIELD XL730
Released on a limited basis as an experimental (XP730) hybrid in 2005, CLEARFIELD XL730 is equivalent to CLEARFIELD XL8 in grain yield, Newpath tolerance and disease resistance, with slightly better milling yield. Suitable for use throughout the U.S. except California, CLEARFIELD XL730 is a long grain with average straw strength and excellent ratoon crop potential.

New for 2007
For the 2007 growing season, RiceTec will be offering two new hybrids: XL729 and the CLEARFIELD Hybrid Levee Brand.

CLEARFIELD XL729
CLEARFIELD XL729 is a premium hybrid that will be released in limited supply for 2007. CLEARFIELD XL729 demonstrated excellent hybrid grain yield in 2006 University trials and is Newpath and Clearpath™ herbicide tolerant with standard milling yield.

CLEARFIELD Levee Hybrid Brand
CLEARFIELD Levee Hybrid Brand is recommended for planting on levees only. University trials have shown good disease tolerance with standard milling yield.

Future Hybrids and Varieties:

Horizon Ag will be offering a new variety for the 2008 growing season:CL171-AR.

CL171-AR
CL171-AR has Wells and CL161 in its parentage and will be the first Arkansas-developed CLEARFIELD release. It offers good yield potential, comparable to or better than CL161. Testing shows that CL171-AR offers a better disease package than CL131 and CL161. In particular, the variety seems to offer more tolerance to sheath blight.

Innovative herbicide option delivers broad-spectrum weed control.

The 2006 introduction of Clearpath herbicide from BASF brings even broader spectrum weed control to rice. Combining the effectiveness of Newpath herbicide and Facet® herbicide into one convenient premix, Clearpath provides the broadest spectrum control of all CLEARFIELD Production System rice herbicides, so it’s easier than ever to help protect your crop from yield-robbing weeds.

Sustainable technology by strong stewardship.

Vigilant stewardship is vital to the protection of the CLEARFIELD® Production System for rice and its value to rice growers. The genetics of rice and the red rice weed are incredibly close. That means there’s potential to move the CLEARFIELD resistance gene into red rice. The most effective way to prevent this is to always plant certified, red-rice-free seed – NOT saved seed – and get the best control possible of red rice in the field. University experts strongly agree that harvested CLEARFIELD Production System for rice seed should not be saved for planting. Most growers also understand the value of stewardship guidelines that protect the technology, allowing them to produce a better rice crop wherever red rice has limited their production.

Key stewardship guidelines include:

  1. Make two herbicide applications from the following:
    • Clearpath™ herbicide followed by Newpath® herbicide
    • Newpath followed by Clearpath
    • Newpath followed by Newpath
  2. Crop Rotation
    • Only plant CLEARFIELD Production System rice seed for one year
    • Follow with Roundup Ready® soybeans or another rotational crop
  3. Do not save seed
    • Reduces the risk of herbicide resistance
  4. Treat with Beyond® herbicide to control escaped red rice
    • Achieve as close to 100 percent red rice control as possible

With the growing popularity of CLEARFIELD rice, it’s essential to order seed early to get the best varieties or hybrids. Talk to your CLEARFIELD seed retailer today to lock in the seed you need for top rice yields and quality.
